Vinyl Coaster Turntable

I was gifted my vinyl coasters by someone very close to me so I wanted to make sure that I gave them a home that showed the proper love and attention they deserved. I must have spent a few months at least casually throwing around ideas in my sketchbook until something felt right.

Designing the turntable

In my design, I knew I wanted all the classic elements of a turntable to be both functional and pronounced. I wanted to have an articulating tonearm, a platter that spun, and even the lovely metallic spindle that helped guide each record into place. Once I was happy with the general design direction, I went to work within Autodesk Fusion creating the base sketches.

I tend to really enjoy creating each of the individual sketches for my 3D printing projects. I feel there is a connection there that really draws upon and takes advantage of my professional product design experience. I really feel at home during this stage.

Once I was happy with my sketches, the 3D form took shape almost instantly. I like to render these out with the end colors and materials in mind, just to make sure I'm avoiding any obvious mistakes where I can.

Printing out the design

At this point, I was quite happy with what I was seeing so I decided to print out each of the pieces and assemble the final product.

I absolutely love my final design. I find myself fidgeting with it anytime I am sitting nearby. The ball bearings and metal dowel rods really give it a bit of a premium feel.

Love from the community

What I didn't expect, however, was how much the 3D printing community would take to this design. I am so very happy to see all the different customizations each person has made with their own Vinyl Coaster Turntable.
